Economics of Battery Energy Storage Systems
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
As a study leader I developed a course to study the economics of battery energy storage systems. Our study utilized Rocky Mountain Institute's "Economics of Battery Energy Storage" as a guide. CMU facilities management provided historical usage data, utility billing , and power infrastructure tour.
Battery Energy Storage System
GVEA Alaska
Golden Valley Energy Association chose Asea Brown Boveri for the primary design & controls engineering for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The system eliminates numerous citywide power outages in Fairbanks, Alaska each month. In 2007 this project was featured in a Modern Marvels documentary on the History Channel.
Compact Power Substation & Battery Energy Storage System Concept
Carnegies Mellon University
A large portion of the CMU campus does not cross utility right of way boundaries. In this area CMU can build, own, and operate an electric power transmission substation. Duquesne Light Company (DLC) transmission rates can provide approximately $3 million in annual savings compared to distribution rates. Battery energy storage systems currently can provide demand reduction savings and potentially additional revenues in future PJM FERC 2222 markets starting in 2026.
Microturbine CHP System
Marina Cove Health Club
In 2001 on behalf of my client, Capstone Turbine Corporation I developed a microturbine combined heat & power system that provided heat for a swimming pool and electric power for a health club.
Microturbine CHP Concept
Pearl Street Revisted
Pearl Street was the first central power plant built in the world by Thomas Edison. As a consultant for Capstone Turbine Corporation, my company TES Energy LLC developed a concept utilizing microturbines to repower the office building now sitting on the the original site of the power plant. Unfortunately the economics did not make repowering practical.
